Virginia Is for Lovers: A Winter Romantic Escape To Love Ridge

Our state’s motto, Virginia is for Lovers, sets the scene just right for your romantic getaway to Love Ridge – enjoy the natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley while treating yourself to couples massage, wine-tasting, fantastic restaurants, live entertainment, outdoor recreation, and quiet nights in your cabin. Surprise your special someone with a few nights together at Love Ridge Mountain Lodging, and embark on a journey together in the wintry  the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Indulging the Senses – Tasty Coffee, Couples Massage, Wine-Sipping, and Truffle Delights

Let us help you set the tone, reserve our Night Skies Romance Experience and arrive to glowing votives with gorgeous rose petal decorations and a bottle of bubbly. After enjoying a cozy night in your Blue Ridge Parkway mountain cabin curled up next to the fire, take a stroll on the trails that wind through our property, brisk and beautiful during the wintertime. Then, head out for a scenic trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway. If the Parkway is open, cruise between Love Ridge and the southern entrance to Shenandoah National Park, pulling off at overlooks like Ravens Roost and Humpback Rocks, if not, delight in the opportunity to walk on the Parkway without car traffic right from your doorstep.

Venture into Waynesboro and grab a latte, mocha, or chai at Happ Coffee, newcomers on the local scene garnering buzz for their boutique coffee beans roasted on-site. Bite into a bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich or avocado toast before heading to Healing Therapy Massage a few miles across town. Owner and head masseuse Nancy brings over a decade of experience and countless five-star reviews – her couples massage will usher you into relaxation and bliss, available in time increments between 30 and 120 minutes. Add extras like essential oils and foot reflexology to pamper yourself even more.

After leaving your massage feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, head 15 minutes down the road to downtown Staunton for an afternoon wine tasting at Ox-Eye Vineyards. The tasting room is in a historic building with a classy ambiance, intimate and ideal for diving into the rich and flavorful world of Shenandoah Valley wines. Their family-run operation grows all the grapes for its esteemed estate wines on a 23-acre vineyard just outside Staunton, taking advantage of the fruitful soil and temperate climate. Opt for one of their tasting flights featuring seven wines, with everything from a berry-forward Pinot Noir to a fruity and dry Chenin Blanc. Pick up some famous truffles made by Laurie’s Chocolates at Accordia in Staunton before returning to your cabin to unwind with a bottle of delicious Ox-Eye wine, decadent truffles, and a movie by the fireplace, made all the more magical if snow is falling outside

An Evening Out – Date Night Dinner and Live Theater or Music

During your romantic getaway, plan a date night in Staunton, where the downtown district is full of small-town charm and embodies Virginia is for Lovers. Sit down for an early dinner at Aioli, where their farm-to-table menu focuses on Mediterranean cuisine. Start with mixed olives and feta and share some bacon-wrapped quail, followed by entrees like filet with roasted potatoes, parmesan truffle risotto with roasted veggies, or pan-roasted pork tenderloin with sauteed Brussels. Finish with a dessert, like their dark chocolate mousse or creme brulee, a fitting treat for your special evening together.

Following your meal, continue your romantic night out with a stroll down Beverly St (the main thoroughfare through downtown Staunton) to the legendary American Shakespeare Center for a performance of Pride and Prejudice. The play kicks off February 1, 2024 with lauded playwright Emma Whipday adapting the Jane Austen classic for the  ensemble, modernizing some of the language while keeping the classic  theme of discovering true love amidst life’s tribulations. If live music is more your speed, check out the line-up at the Foundry in Waynesboro or head to the Edge restaurant at Wintergreen Resort after dinner, where local musicians take the stage from 8-11 pm on weekends – catch folk/pop group Far Away on January 20, 2024; country/bluegrass act Lana and the Hound on Jan 27th; and other groups throughout the rest of the ski season. Sip on a microbrew in the warm and inviting ski lodge atmosphere and share a dance to some live tunes.

Outdoor Adventure Followed by Lasagna Dinner and a Soothing Soak

We’re surrounded by stunning natural landscapes at Love Ridge, with thousands of acres of nationally protected areas on all sides and the easy access  ski terrain at Wintergreen Resort just 6 1/2 miles away. Head up for a day of skiing or snowboarding on their 129 acres of slopes, where high-speed lifts service a variety of runs ranging from smooth and easy to steep and challenging. Enjoy riding arm in arm up to their summit, which stands tall at 3,500 feet and offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the area. If you don’t ski or snowboard, explore Wintergreen’s 30-mile network of interlinking trails – excellent during every season but exceptionally serene and peaceful during the less-touristy winter months. If you visit on Valentine’s Day, join the Nature Center’s guided hike from 9 am – 1 pm on Feb 14th, 2024, when a ranger will lead your group on several notable local trails like Pond Hollow and Fortunes Ridge. Or if you didn’t get a massage in Waynesboro or need another, check out the Spa at Wintergreen as an alternative to the slopes.

After an exhilarating day spent outside, stop by the Market at Wintergreen on your way back to Love Ridge and pick up some wine, salad and/or slice of cake to complement our 2-person lasagna.. Choose whether you want meat or cheese lasagna, locally made by Mona Lisa Pasta, and we’ll have it waiting in your fridge, ready to heat up when you return. While it cooks in the oven, hop in your private hot tub together under the stars (available in four of our cabins – Torry Ridge, Sherando, Ravens Roost, and Spy Rock) or your indoor jet/soaking tub (available in seven of our other cabins). Enjoy an intimate evening together, wrapping up a memorable weekend at Love Ridge.

Stay with us this winter, escape to Love Ridge, and discover why Virginia is for Lovers!
